Week 15 – Guard Passing, Strikes, and Training Etiquette: Level Up Your Skills!

Hey team! Welcome to Week 15 of our curriculum! This week’s focus is on guard passing from the top position, combining precision, control, and technique to dominate your opponent. Additionally, we will strengthen our Self-Defense skills, learning to block strikes, execute takedowns, and finish effectively.

Let’s also take this opportunity to reflect on training etiquette, one of the key pillars of Gracie Barra philosophy, which allows us to maintain a positive and respectful training environment.

Get ready for a week of growth, learning, and excellence on the mats!

📌 What Will You Learn This Week?

1. Self-Defense – Strike

  • Class A: Defense against a Front Kick:
    • Block the kick effectively.
    • Counterattack with an Elbow Strike to neutralize the threat.
  • Class B: Defense against a High Round Kick:
    • Block the strike and control with an Inside Hook Takedown.
    • Finish with a Straight Footlock to end the situation safely.

💡 Tip: Timing and positioning are key. Stay calm under pressure, block the strike efficiently, and transition smoothly into your counterattack. The elbow strike and footlock are powerful finishes when applied with precision.

2. Sport Jiu-Jitsu – Guard Passing (Top Position)

This week, we’ll focus on effective guard passing strategies to dominate from the top:

  • Class A:
    • Open the Guard Standing Up using two hands on the pants for control and stability.
    • Leg Drag Guard Pass: A dynamic and efficient way to clear the guard and establish sidemount control.
  • Class B:
    • Open the Guard on the Knees with both hands on the pants for solid posture.
    • Two Arms Under Guard Pass while maintaining control on the knees to bypass the opponent’s legs.

💡 Tip: When passing the guard, focus on posture and pressure. Keep your movements controlled and use your grips effectively to maintain balance and dominate your opponent’s guard.

🔑 GB1 Drill – Repetition and Control

This week’s drills are all about reinforcing guard passing and transitioning into sidemount control:

  • Class A & B: Open the guard → Pass the guard → Establish sidemount control (repeating turns with your partner).

💡 Tip: Drill with intent and precision. Focus on your posture when opening the guard and maintain steady pressure as you move into sidemount. Consistent repetition builds confidence and sharpens your movements.

🎯 Specific Training – Guard

In this week’s specific training, we’ll focus on testing and refining your guard passing skills. Work on combining the techniques learned in class to create a fluid and effective passing sequence:

  1. Standing Guard Openings: Use grips and posture to control the opponent.
  2. Leg Drag and Two-Arm Passes: Maintain focus and execute the passes smoothly.
  3. Sidemount Transition: Solidify your control after passing the guard.

💡 How to Improve: Start slow and focus on clean, technical movements. Once you’re comfortable, increase the intensity and resistance for a realistic training experience.

🗣 GB1 Talking Point – The GB Training Etiquette

This week, we will discuss the GB Training Etiquette, an essential part of Gracie Barra’s culture. Respect for training partners, instructors, and the mat is the foundation of our team’s success.

💡 Reflection: Training etiquette includes being punctual, showing respect, practicing good hygiene, and supporting your teammates. Remember, Jiu-Jitsu is about growth—on and off the mats. By honoring these values, we create a positive and supportive environment for everyone.

🔥 Why Is This Week Important?

Mastering guard passing is essential for building a complete and well-rounded Jiu-Jitsu game. Whether standing or kneeling, these techniques teach you how to break through your opponent’s defenses and establish control.

Additionally, strengthening your Self-Defense skills will improve your ability to handle real-world situations with confidence and precision. Learning to block strikes and transition into takedowns or submissions gives you the tools to remain calm and effective under pressure.

Finally, reflecting on training etiquette will remind us all that the Gracie Barra philosophy is built on respect, discipline, and teamwork.
