Hey team! We’ve arrived at Week 12 of our curriculum, and this week is all about mastering control and submissions from dominant positions like Turtle and Back Control. We will also focus on escapes from bear hugs in Self-Defense situations, combining technique, leverage, and precision to elevate your Jiu-Jitsu skills.
This week’s training is an opportunity to develop advanced transitions and sharpen your ability to attack and defend seamlessly. Let’s get ready to grow and dominate!
📌 What Will You Learn This Week?
1. Self-Defense – Clinch & Holds
- Class A: Escape from a Front Bear Hug over the arms with a combination of:
- Hip Throw to off-balance your opponent.
- Transition into Knee on Belly for control.
- Class B: Escape from a Rear Bear Hug over the arms:
- Execute a Rear Takedown with control.
- Transition into Sidemount for dominance.
💡 Tip: Bear hugs are common in real-life situations. Focus on staying calm, creating space, and applying leverage effectively. Use your hips and weight distribution to turn the situation in your favor.
2. Sport Jiu-Jitsu – Back Control | Turtle Position
This week, we’ll explore Back Control and Turtle Position, two critical positions for attacking and dominating in Jiu-Jitsu:
- Class A:
- Taking the Back from Turtle Position using the Seatbelt Grip, creating space for the hook placement.
- Clock Choke: A classic and powerful submission from the Turtle Position.
- Class B:
- Taking the Back from Turtle Position using the Lapel Grip, a highly effective control.
- Two Collars Choke & Rear Naked Choke: Two dominant submissions to finish the fight once you control the back.
💡 Tip: When attacking from the Turtle Position, focus on precision and control. The Seatbelt Grip and Lapel Grip are keys to maintaining back control and transitioning into submissions. Don’t rush—secure your hooks before attacking.
🔑 GB1 Drill – Back Attacks and Escapes
The drills this week are all about perfecting your control and submission flow from the Turtle Position:
- Class A: Clock Choke + Defense against the Clock Choke by flipping over, transitioning into Sidemount Control, and moving to the Mount.
- Class B: Taking the Back from Turtle Position + Two Collars Choke + Rear Naked Choke (taking turns).
💡 Tip: Drilling these movements will improve your timing and fluidity. Work on maintaining pressure while transitioning smoothly into submissions or control positions. Repetition builds confidence and muscle memory.
🎯 Specific Training – Sidemount
In this week’s specific training, we’ll focus on attacking and defending from Sidemount. Test your transitions into Back Control and submissions, applying the techniques you’ve learned.
💡 How to Make the Most of It:
- Stay heavy: Use your weight to control your opponent and prevent escapes.
- Secure your position: Before transitioning to the back, make sure you’ve stabilized your control.
- Look for submissions: Practice the Clock Choke, Two Collars Choke, and Rear Naked Choke with precision and focus.
🗣 GB1 Talking Point – The Equipe GB
This week, we’ll discuss The Equipe GB—the Gracie Barra team that connects all of us worldwide. The spirit of unity, teamwork, and shared growth is what makes Gracie Barra a global family.
💡 Reflection: Remember, when you step on the mat, you are part of something bigger. The Equipe GB is about supporting each other, helping teammates grow, and celebrating every victory—big or small—together.
🔥 Why Is This Week Important?
Mastering escapes, back control, and submissions will make you a more complete and confident Jiu-Jitsu practitioner. Learning to take the back from the Turtle Position and attacking with the Clock Choke or Rear Naked Choke are fundamental tools that will elevate your game.
Additionally, the Self-Defense techniques will prepare you for real-life situations, teaching you to stay calm, create space, and regain control under pressure.
Every class is a new opportunity to improve, challenge yourself, and push your limits. Trust the process, train with purpose, and watch your game transform.
Let’s give it our all this week! I’ll see you on the mats for another round of learning, growth, and success. OSS! 👊💥
