Week 8 – Control, Technique, and Precision: Time to Evolve Your Jiu-Jitsu!

Hey team! We’ve arrived at Week 8 of our curriculum, and this week is unmissable. We’re focusing on skills that will elevate your Jiu-Jitsu game and improve your efficiency in Side Mount Control (Sidemount), both in Self-Defense and Sport Jiu-Jitsu.

Get ready to step onto the mat with full focus because we’re going to dive deep into essential techniques and secrets that will help you master the fundamentals of Jiu-Jitsu and apply these strategies in real situations.

📌 What Will You Learn This Week?

1. Self-Defense – Clinch & Holds

  • Class A: Learn how to defend against Hook Punches with an effective combination:
    • Headlock Takedown to dominate the opponent.
    • Smooth transition into the Armbar, a powerful submission.
  • Class B: A strategic game of defense and control:
    • Jab Slip to avoid incoming strikes.
    • Bodylock Clinch + Rear Bodylock, advancing with wrist control.
    • Finish with a Forward Takedown, ensuring a clean and precise takedown.

💡 Tip: The key here is to stay calm, anticipate the attack, and use your opponent’s movement against them. Practice balance and body positioning because these techniques depend on timing and control.

2. Sport Jiu-Jitsu – Side Mount Control (Sidemount)

Side Mount Control is one of the strongest positions in Jiu-Jitsu and a critical point for advancing your game. We’ll break down the lessons into essential techniques:

  • Class A:
    • Transition to Mount by switching your base and passing the leg over.
    • Papercut Choke: A simple but devastating choke with the opponent’s arm trapped.
  • Class B:
    • Transition to Mount by sliding the knee over the opponent’s belly.
    • Spinning Armbar: A dynamic and surprising submission from the sidemount.

💡 Tip: In Side Mount Control, the secret is to be heavy and stable. Use your weight and positioning to exhaust the opponent and prevent them from creating space to escape. Think two steps ahead: while they defend one attack, you’re already preparing the next move.

🔑 Extra Tips – Tips of the Week:

Controlling the opponent’s elbows makes all the difference in Side Mount Control. Prof. Carlos Gracie Jr. teaches us two powerful strategies to dismantle the opponent’s defense:

1️⃣ Temporarily Switch to Scarf Hold:

  • Shift your base momentarily to the Scarf Hold position.
  • Use your inside knee to pry under the opponent’s arm, eliminating their defensive frame.

2️⃣ Roll the Opponent:

  • Slightly roll the opponent onto their side, forcing them to face away.
  • This creates the perfect angle for you to dominate the space under their armpit with your outside knee, breaking their defense and opening paths for submissions.

💡 Important detail: This isn’t about strength. Focus on using your body weight, position your knee with precision, and control your breathing. These adjustments will make all the difference in your game.

🎯 GB1 Drill – The Complete Path

This week, the GB1 Drill focuses on a full sequence to strengthen your Jiu-Jitsu:

  • Open the guard safely.
  • Pass the guard and stabilize in Sidemount.
  • Transition to the Mount.
  • Execute the Bridge Mount Choke Escape.

💡 Tip: Practice the transitions with focus on technique. Repetition is your best ally for building muscle memory. Work patiently with your partner, making your movements fluid, and notice how the positions connect naturally.

How to Get the Most Out of This Week’s Classes?

Here are some essential tips to help you take full advantage of this week’s training:

  1. Pay Attention to Details: In Jiu-Jitsu, small adjustments make the biggest difference. Listen carefully to your instructors, observe their demonstrations, and try to replicate every detail.
  2. Train with Different Partners: Varying your training partners allows you to test techniques against different styles and body types.
  3. Controlled Resistance: Gradually increase your partner’s resistance during drills. Start light, focusing on technique, then add resistance to simulate real situations.
  4. Ask Questions: If something isn’t clear or you’re struggling with a technique, don’t hesitate to ask your instructors. Learning happens faster when you address your doubts on the spot.

🔥 What Does This Week Represent for Your Progress?

Mastering Side Mount Control and its transitions is a major milestone in Jiu-Jitsu. Knowing how to break down an opponent’s defense and advance to submissions will make your game stronger and more effective.

Additionally, the Self-Defense techniques will boost your confidence and ability to protect yourself in real-life situations. This is the perfect blend of technique, control, and precision!

Every training session is an opportunity to evolve. If you show up and give your full focus, you’ll leave the mat stronger, more prepared, and closer to your goals.

See you on the mats! Let’s train hard, evolve together, and push past our limits! OSS! 👊💥
