Week 13 – Closed Guard, Control, and Submissions: Time to Refine Your Game!

Hey team! We’ve arrived at Week 13 of our curriculum, and this week’s focus will be on developing a strong Closed Guard and mastering the Spider Guard. We’ll work on sweeps, submissions, and distance management in self-defense scenarios to build a more technical and offensive guard.

The goal is to turn your guard into a true fortress—offensive, precise, and secure. Get ready to develop skills that will make a real difference in your Jiu-Jitsu!

📌 What Will You Learn This Week?

1. Self-Defense – Strike

  • Class A: Defending strikes from the Closed Guard Bottom:
    • Efficient punch blocking.
    • Clinch to neutralize the opponent.
    • Finish with the Triangle Choke.
  • Class B: Distance management from the Closed Guard Bottom:
    • Use of the Knee Shield for protection.
    • Execution of the Upkick to create space.
    • Perform the Technical Lift to stand up safely.

💡 Tip: Managing distance and neutralizing strikes is crucial in self-defense. Focus on your timing and the smooth transition from defense to a controlled attack.

2. Sport Jiu-Jitsu – Closed Guard | Spider Guard

This week, we’ll refine sweeps and controls from both the Closed Guard and the Spider Guard:

  • Class A:
    • Sit Up Sweep from Closed Guard: A simple and effective sweep to off-balance the opponent.
    • Kimura from Closed Guard: A classic submission that takes advantage of arm control.
  • Class B:
    • Spider Guard Control against an opponent trying to bullfight or posture.
    • Spider Guard Sweep when the opponent is on his knees.

💡 Tip: In the Closed Guard, focus on locking the opponent in, using your legs and hips to control distance. For the Spider Guard, the secret is in grip control and using your legs to off-balance and destabilize your opponent.

🔑 GB1 Drill – Connection and Control

This week’s drills focus on reinforcing essential movements and improving the flow between control and submissions:

  • Class A: Sit Up Sweep from Closed Guard + Knee-Elbow Escape (alternating turns with your partner).
  • Class B: Spider Guard control against opponents attempting bullfighting, posturing, or recovering to closed guard (repeated movement).

💡 Tip: During drills, focus on control and precision. Repetition builds muscle memory and gives you the confidence to apply these techniques during live sparring.

🎯 Specific Training – Guard

In this week’s specific training, we’ll focus on control from guard positions. Apply the techniques you’ve learned, connecting sweeps, submissions, and constant control:

  1. Test the Sit Up Sweep: Take advantage of moments when your opponent’s balance shifts.
  2. Practice the Kimura: Master the arm control and leverage to finish the submission efficiently.
  3. Spider Guard: Use your legs as levers to off-balance the opponent while focusing on grip and distance control.

🗣 GB1 Talking Point – The Mission of Gracie Barra

This week, we’ll discuss the Mission of Gracie Barra: to provide a positive and safe environment where every student can grow, evolve, and achieve their goals—both on and off the mats.

💡 Reflection: Gracie Barra’s mission is to change lives through Jiu-Jitsu. By training, teaching, and sharing knowledge, you are part of something bigger—a global movement that promotes discipline, respect, and self-improvement.

🔥 Why Is This Week Important?

Focusing on the Closed Guard and Spider Guard will help solidify one of the most important pillars of your Jiu-Jitsu: the ability to control and submit your opponent even from the bottom position.

Additionally, the Self-Defense techniques will ensure you know how to stay safe, calm, and confident in real-world situations.

Every class is a new opportunity to evolve. Use this week to refine your sweeps, improve your control, and practice submissions with precision and intention.

See you on the mats for another week of learning and growth! Let’s give it everything we’ve got. OSS! 👊💥
