Week 9 – Constant Evolution: Guards, Submissions, and Smart Defense!

Hey team! We’re now in Week 9 of our curriculum, and this week is packed with fundamental techniques to elevate your Jiu-Jitsu game. Our focus will be on Guard Bottom, mastering effective sweeps, submissions, and solid defenses.

Each technique this week is designed to sharpen your foundation and build confidence, preparing you to tackle real challenges on the mat. Let’s approach this week with attention to detail and a hunger to evolve!

📌 What Will You Learn This Week?

1. Self-Defense – Strike

  • Class A: How to block punches from the Turtle position and safely recover the guard.
  • Class B: Defense starting from Knee on Belly:
    • Efficient blocking of strikes.
    • Smooth transition to the Turtle position and recovering the guard.

💡 Tip: Self-defense starts with active protection and intelligent movement. Train your reaction time, blocks, and guard recovery with fluidity. Don’t force movements – use the space your opponent gives you to regain control.

2. Sport Jiu-Jitsu – Guard Bottom

We’ll focus on guard bottom play, learning offensive techniques to sweep and submit your opponent:

  • Class A:
    • Pendulum Sweep: A highly effective sweep to off-balance and dominate the opponent.
    • Straight Armbar: A submission from closed guard, taking advantage of your opponent’s defense against the pendulum sweep.
  • Class B:
    • Taking the Back from Closed Guard: Transition to take the opponent’s back from the closed guard, one of the most efficient positional advancements.
    • Triangle Choke: A classic submission from closed guard with precise control of the sleeve and wrist.

💡 Tip: Mastering guard bottom play means staying offensive even in what may seem like a “defensive” position. Pay close attention to your hip movements and leg positioning – correct adjustments are the key to successful sweeps and submissions.

🔑 GB1 Drill – Connected Fundamentals

This week’s drills will help you connect all the movements you’ve learned:

  • Class A:
    • Pendulum Sweep + Mount + Knee Elbow Escape from Mount.
  • Class B:
    • Recovering Closed Guard from Side Mount + Submission.

💡 Tip: Focus on the connection between movements during the drills. Train with precision and patience, and notice how each technique flows naturally into the next, building a solid and fluid game.

🎯 Specific Training – Guard Bottom

In specific training, we’ll go deeper into guard bottom play. Practice applying the techniques you’ve learned – sweeps, transitions, and submissions. The goal is to become comfortable and offensive while playing guard.

💡 How to Get the Most Out of It:

  1. Test your sweeps: Don’t stay static – constantly look for opportunities to off-balance your partner.
  2. Adjust the details: In both the Pendulum Sweep and Triangle Choke, every inch matters. Pay attention to controlling the opponent’s arm and moving your hips correctly.
  3. Progressive resistance: Start with light resistance and gradually increase to simulate real sparring situations.

🗣 GB1 Talking Point – The GB History

This week, we’ll also discuss Gracie Barra’s history. Understanding our origins is essential to embracing the essence of Jiu-Jitsu and the philosophy we practice every day on the mat.

💡 Reflection: Knowing where we come from inspires us to be part of this legacy and honor the tradition with respect, discipline, and constant evolution.

🔥 Why Is This Week So Important?

The guard bottom game and defenses against strikes are crucial skills in Jiu-Jitsu. Knowing how to recover the guard, apply sweeps, and finish your opponent even from a disadvantageous position will transform how you see the sport.

By practicing transitions between defense, attack, and recovery, you’ll build a complete, well-rounded game ready for any situation.

Each class is an opportunity to challenge yourself, learn something new, and leave the mat one step closer to your goals. Remember: evolution comes with consistency and dedication.

See you on the mats, team! Let’s train with focus, discipline, and a lot of energy. OSS! 👊💥
